Through nearly 50 years of private practice and academic service, you have distinguished yourself as a clinician, educator and civic servant. Your activities in professional dentistry have been widely varied, encompassing dozens of organizations and institutions. Some of your present and past service activities include: President, American Dental Association; President, American Association of Dental Schools; Treasurer, Federation Dentaire Internationale; Director and President, American Board of Orthodontics; President, California Dental Association. The depth of your commitment to education and to the dissemination of professional research is also reflected by your more than 500 lectures, papers, clinics and essays, and more than 100 published articles. Your talents and leadership have been honored with awards from four separate institutions, including Gonzaga University, University of Washington, University of San Francisco and University of the Pacific. Your distinguished career has also earned you such accolades as the Hinman Medallion for Leadership, the Albert H. Ketcham Orthodontic Award, the Medallion of Distinction from the University of the Pacific, the Gold Medallion and Merit Award from the Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation, the Chairman's Award from the American Dental Trade Association, the Presidential Citation and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Dental Association, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy Gold Medal. In recognition of your outstanding leadership and extraordinary contributions to the field of dentistry, the University of Detroit Mercy is pleased to confer on you an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.
